Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Former Waukon teacher Frances A. Steffen, 81, died Monday November 20, 1989 at North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City, Iowa. She was born July 28, 1908 in Waukon, Iowa to Albert and Martha (Helming) Steffen. She graduated from Waukon Junior College. She received her BA degree from the State University of Iowa and her MA degree from Colorado State College of Education. She continued her studies at Northwestern University, the University of Buffalo, the University of Montana, the University of Hawaii, and the University of South Florida. She taught elementary school in Waukon before teaching high school in Anamosa, Iowa and Maquoketa. For 23 years she taught at Mason City High School.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Mason City, National Education Association, American Association of University Women, Association for Retarded Citizens, Monday Study Club, United Presbyterian Women, and Handicap Village Care and Review Committee.
Surviving are four sisters, Laura Steffen and Althea Ericson, both of Rockford, IL, Amy Gardner of Seal Beach, CA and Marion Fenwick of Portland, OR; a nephew and two nieces.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday November 25, 1989 at First Presbyterian Church in Mason City with the Rev. Donald Simmonds officiating. Burial will be Saturday November 25, 1989 at 3 p.m. at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon with a memorial service at 4 p.m. in Waukon at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Henry Heinbuch of Zion United Church of Christ conducting the services. Major Erickson Funeral Home of Mason City is in charge of arrangements.
