Caroline L. Duvel, the daughter of Duran and Wilhelmina (Debner) Miller, was born April 16, 1912 in the Ludlow Township, rural Waukon. She was baptized June 20, 1912 and later confirmed on May 5, 1925 at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church. Caroline attended Ludlow #6 rural school.

On October 29, 1931 Caroline married Clarence A. Duvel at her parents home in a ceremony conducted by Rev. Klosterboe. She and Clarence farmed in the Ludlow area and she did a lot of baking, specializing in wedding cakes. In 1960, they moved to Waukon where Caroline started working in the food service department for the Allamakee Community Schools. She continued to work there for 17 years and during this time earned her GED diploma. She was an active and faithful member of the Salem United Church of Christ and its Ladies circle. She also belonged to several card clubs. Caroline loved to play cards, crochet and quilt. She was a very good cook and was known for her big gardens, raising both vegetables and flowers. She also enjoyed traveling around the country.

Caroline died Wednesday, August 27 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon following a brief illness. She reached the age of 85.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 30 at 1:30 p.m. at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon, IA, with Rev. Jack Frohn officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Boots Ewing and Jean Snitker. Pallbearers were her nephews Loren and Norman Miller; Harlen, Wayne and Gary Hermeire; Virgil Duvel; and Gary and Dennis Winkie.

Caroline is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clarence, his sister Ella Mae Hermeier and brothers Dewey and Roy Miller.

She is survived by her daughter, DiAnna Higgins of Pacific Grove, CA; her son, Duane (Shirley) Duvel of Waukon; grandchildren Kathy Bjerke and John Duvel; great grandchildren Amanda Guese; Mikael and Adam Bjerke; Shana and Derek Duvel; and great-great grandchildren Ryan and Mitchell Guese.
