Rites Are Held For Mrs. Casten

Mrs. Walter Casten, age 73, of Postville, passed away on September 18, 1962 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Postville, following a lingering illness.

Adelia Marie Lena Schlee was born April 19, 1889 in Read township, Clayton Center, Iowa, the daughter of William Schlee and Fredericka Schmidt Schlee. She was baptized in Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center by the Rev. Seifert on June 13, 1889. She was confirmed in St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Postville on March 23, 1902 by Rev. Bockelmann.

She was united in marriage to Walter Casten on February 18, 1914. To this union were born two children. Following their marriage they farmed in the Decorah area, and later farmed in the Postville and Monona areas before retiring in Postville.

She was preceded in death by one son, who died in infancy; one daughter, Romelda, who died at the age of 13; her parents; a twin sister, who died in infancy; two brothers, Henry of Waterloo and John of Ossian.

She is survived by her husband; two brothers, Edward and Louis of Postville; and many other relatives and friends.

She was an active member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Funeral Friday.

Funeral services were conducted at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Postville on Friday, September 21, at 2:00 with the Rev. Charles E. Witt officiating. Burial was in Postville Cemetery.

Held as Poisoner of Daughter
Mrs. Walter Casten, middle aged farm woman of Winneshiek county, Iowa, faces trial, with her husband, on charges of poisoning her 14-year-old daughter, Romelda, to collect $5,000 life insurance. The girl died last November.

(Note: Both Mr. and Mrs. Casten were found "not guilty" at their trials - see obit of Romelda for additional information)
