Funeral services for Fred Bruns were held July 11, 1986 at 11:00 a.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Terrance Hennesey officiated. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in the Grand Meadow Cemetery, rural Luana, Iowa. Casket Bearers were Ordell Kjosa, David Schierholz, Elmer Heins, Milton Schierholz, Brent Bruns, and Jerome Lenth.

Frederick Byron Bruns, son of Henry and Emma (Witt) Bruns, was born February 2, 1899 in Bloomfield Township, Winneshiek County, near Castalia, Iowa. He died July 6, 1986 in the Guttenberg Care Center, Guttenberg, Iowa.

He attended school at Castalia and Monona, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army during WWI. He was a member of the famous Rainbow Division (42nd). During his youth, he obtained his pilot's license and became a "barnstormer", flying around the country giving rides. During WWII he served his country as an aircraft mechanic. Fred farmed and in his later years, he was a truck driver.

Bruns was married to Wilma Hazlett. They had a daughter, Norma. On May 3, 1933, he was married to Hilda Pearson in the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. They had a son, Dan Bruns. They lived in several different areas but returned in the mid-1940's to farm east of Postville. They moved to Monona in 1958 and then to Postville in 1971.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Hilda, who died January 12, 1986. Surviving is a son, Dan of Garnavillo,Iowa, a daughter, Mrs. Alvin (Norma) Grahm of Clackamus, Oregon, six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Don (Mary) White of Postville and Mrs. Jim(Frances) Foster of Burlington, Iowa and several nieces and nephews. He was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church, the American Legion and the V.F.W.zg
