Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel Meyer were held Saturday, February 19, 2000 at 11 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Rev. T. M. Marks officiated. Joann Martins was the organist and Ronald Meyer was the soloist. Casket bearers were Rick, Eric, Chris and David Gunderson and Ronald and Richard Barker. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service were in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Ethel Eliese Wilhelmine (Dahms) Meyer, the daughter of Fred and Eliese (Kluss) Dahms, was born February 9, 1901 in Fayette County. She passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2000 in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. She had reached the age of 99 years and six days.

She was baptized April 7, 1901 by the Rev. E. Bockleman and confirmed April 4, 1915 in the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia, Iowa by the Rev. W. A. Harms. Ethel attended the rural school near her home.

On December 16, 1919, she was married to Cevert W. Meyer at the home of her parents by the Rev. Bockleman. To this union three children were born, a son, Loren, and two daughters, LaVerna and Bernadine. They farmed in Clayton County for ten years. After Cevert's death on May 22, 1930, Ethel continued to live on the farm for ten more years. She then moved to Postville. On October 1, 1943 Ethel began her 27-year career as the cook at the Postville Hospital, retiring in January of 1971. On November 15, 1993 she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Postville.

Ethel was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. She had served as treasurer of the women's organization for two years.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Cevert, a daughter, Bernadine, three grandchildren, Terry Lynn Gunderson, Jerald Barker and James Barker, two sons-in-law, Ridar Gunderson and Kenneth Barker, five brothers, Harvey, Gilbert, Lloyd, Earl, and Clarence, two sisters, Mabel Christofferson and Lorene Dahms.

Surviving are a daughter, LaVerna Barker of Dubuque, IA, a son, Loren (Betty) Meyer of Postville, ten grandchildren, Vicki (Dennis) Post, Richard (Monica) Barker, Ronnie (Karen) Barker, all of Dubuque, IA; Mary Beth Meyer of Rochester, MN, Patricia (Gregory) Kohner of LaCrosse, WI, Deborah (Joel) Vilensky of Ft. Wayne, IN, Eric (Annette) Gunderson of Hillsboro, OR, Chris (Bobbi) Gunderson of Postville, Richard (Renee) Gunderson and David Gunderson, all of Castalia.

Also surviving are 15 great grandchildren: Branden Post, Jennifer Barker, Lindsay and Laura Barker, Jessie, Vicki Sue, Rebecca, Dusti, Erica, and Elizabeth Gunderson, and Carrie and Trisha Gunderson, Stephanie (Daniel) Shumway, and Sarah and Rachel Vilensky, one great-great grandson, Michael Shumway, and a brother, Wayne (Colette) Dahms of Decorah, IA.
