John Weipert Accidentally Killed

Lansing relatives and friends were saddened last Thursday evening by news of the death of John C. Weipert, who accidentally shot himself while going through a wire gate, when returning from a duck hunt. He had his cows pastured in the Hirth & Gang meadow on the river, and had taken his shotgun along in case he would see any ducks, as some of the birds were making a winter roost there. Exactly how it happened will never be known, but Mr. Gang, who came along with his own cows later, found the body on one side of the gate and the gun on the other.
Coroner Huecker and Sheriff Bulman were notified, and after arriving on the scene and looking it over, pronounced it an accidental death, no inquest being deemed necessary.
John C. Weipert was born in Lansing township May 15, 1875, and died Dec. 17, 1931, being aged 56 years, 7 months, and 2 days. He was the oldest son of the late Ferdinand Weipert, who passed away 23 years ago. Deceased was twice married, first to Sophia Casper, of Iowa township, three of their six children, a son and two daughters, surviving. His second wife was Ida May Henry of Milwaukee, who with four children, two boys and two girls survive to mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father. His aged mother, Mrs. Ferd Weipert, four brothers, Mike of Freeport, Ill., Joe and Theodore, Lansing, and Frank, Big Timber, Mont., and three sisters, Mesdames John Strub, George Scholtes, and Edward Sheriff, all of Lansing, also survive, besides many other relatives and friends.
John was well and favorably known to everybody in Lansing and vicinity, having served as Night Watch during his early manhood and acting in that capacity at times after his return from Milwaukee. For a while he ran a milk route in Lansing, and some time ago removed to near Dorchester to engage in farming.
Undertaker Will Saam was called after the accident and brought the remains here for preparation for burial taking them back to the farm home next evening. The funeral was held from the house Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., Rev. Father Kreimer, of Dorchester, leading the prayer service there. Then the funeral procession wended its way back to Gethsemane Cemetery, west of Lansing, where interment was made.
