Hilda Martins

Funeral services for Hilda Martins were held Friday, September 25, 1998 at 11 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Rev. T. M. Marks officiated. Joann Martins was the organist. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Hilda Minnie Mathilda (Meyer) Martins, the daughter of Henry and Bertha (Krambeer) Meyer, was born February 17, 1906, at Postville, Iowa. She passed away Monday, September 21, 1998, in Veterans Memorial Hospital at Waukon, Iowa. She had reached the age of 92 years, seven months, and four days.

She was baptized May 6, 1906, by Pastor Paulson of Luana and confirmed September 5, 1920 by Pastor Schmidt. Hilda was graduated from Postville High School in 1923. She was married to John J. Martins on August 31, 1927 at the home of her parents which is the red brick house west of Postville. To this union seven children were born. The couple farmed west of Postville on the Martins family farm. John and Hilda operated the Golden Dawn Dairy, with Hilda doing the inside work such as making the cottage cheese and chocolate milk, and John took care of the milking and delivery route.

Surviving are her seven children, John (Bev) Martins of Carpentersville, IL, Bernald (Joann) Martins and Virgil (Lavon) Martins, and Jerald Martins, all of Postville, IA, Mary (Roger) Baglien of Burnsville, MN, Janice Martins of Chicago, IL, Stanley (Cheryl) Martins of Postville; 19 grandchildren: John Martins, Twyla McLaughlin, Vicky Easley, Marietta Sievert, David Martins, E. J. Martins, Teresa Kieffer, Benton Martins, Quenton Martins, Michael Martins, Brian Martins, Alan Martins, Larry Martins, Lori Martins, Mark Martins, Ronda Hubbard, Robin Seidel, Spencer Martins, Kallee Martins; 27 great-grandchildren: Christina and Michelle Martins; Jennifer, Jessica, and Ryan Easley; David, Jr., Tiffany, Shawn and Janice Martins, Danielle, Courtney, Zachary and Jonah Martins; Heather, Christopher and Wyatt Kieffer; Samantha and Bailey Martins, Brittany and Devin Martins; Casey and Rachel Martins, Alyssa and Moriah Martins; Brenna, Marissa and Tiffany Martins.

Also surviving are two sisters, Amy (Robert) Harris of Bethesda, MD and Ruth (Harvey) Lenth of Postville, IA.

She is preceded in death by her husband, John in 1969, her parents, two sisters, Ethel Meyer and Leona Bachtell, one brother, Lawrence Meyer, a daughter-in-law, Joan Martins, and a granddaughter-in-law, Debbie Martins.

Hilda was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Women of the ELCA and had served as Group Leader for several years. She was active in church work throughout her life and began teaching Sunday School in German right after being confirmed. Hilda's involvement in the community included Charter memberships in both the Henderson Prairie and West Post Country Clubs, who have celebrated 50-year anniversaries. She served on the first Allamakee County Extension Council for 35 years and was active in the Farm Bureau Women's organization for 35 years, serving as both County and Township Chairperson. For over 30 years, Hilda was a member of the Allamakee County Cancer Society and was County Chairman most of that time.

She was a member of the Monday Club in Postville, the VFW Auxiliary, and a charter member of the Postville Historical Society. Hilda was active in 4-H and responsible for their projects and booths at the Big Four Fair. She also served as a volunteer at the Allamakee County Home at Waukon for more than 20 years.

Casket bearers were grandson, John, David Sr., E.J., Benton, Quenton, Michael, David Jr., Brian, Alan Larry, Mark and Spencer Martins and Joe Seidel.
