David Benjamin Flage, 92, of Waukon, went home to be with the Lord Monday, September 27, 2004, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Saturday, October 2, at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon with Pastor Amy Perkins officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

David was born February 1, 1912, to his parents, David Jacob and Sophia (Hager) Flage, on their rural Waukon, Iowa, farm in Ludlow Township. He was baptized and confirmed at Zalmona Presbyterian Church. David attended rural elementary schools, graduated from Waukon High School and Waukon Junior College in 1932. He went on to earn his BA from the University of Iowa, where he lettered in track and cross country. After teaching for a year in Henderson, Iowa, he returned to Waukon where he taught math and science for seven years and coached a number of sports.

On August 4, 1940 he married Gladys Hagen at the Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville, Iowa. They returned to the Flage home farm in Ludlow where he and Gladys farmed for 40 years and were well known for raising registered Brown Swiss Dairy Cattle.

David was an active member of Zalmona Presbyterian Church where he taught Sunday School for many years and held numerous offices. He was a board member for the Rural Electric Cooperative and belonged to Kiwanis, Farm Bureau, the Gideon Society, and the Waukon Booster Club. Even after his retirement Dave continued to follow local sports teams as well as the Iowa Hawkeyes. He was particularly fond of following the activities of his children and grandchildren and spending time with his family. His family was impacted and inspired by his love and faithfulness to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Survivors include his wife Gladys of Waukon; six children, Ruth (Milton) Nolting of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Carol (Neil) Middleton of Rockford, Ill., David J. Flage of Waterloo, Iowa, Mark (Becky) Flage of Watkinsville, Ga., Sharon (Kim) Pagel of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Steve (Jerri Dee) Flage of Wausau, Wis.; 19 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Lars Middleton; five sisters, Ada, Elsie, and Minnie Snitker, Evangeline Flage, and Dorothy Nagel; and two brothers, Lorenz and Grant Flage.

Casketbearers were Tim Nolting, Leah Middleton, Elizabeth and Andy Flage, Jonathan and Joshua Pagel, and Kirsten, Joel, and Mark Flage.
