Memorial services were held Monday May 22 for Robert R. Strong, 75, who died Thursday May 18, 1995 at Veterans Memorial Hospital. The Rev. Lynn Groe conducted the 4 p.m. service at St. John's Lutheran Church. Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Born April 4, 1920 in Lansing, he was the son of Merle and Julia Sparks Strong. He attended Lansing schools and during World War II served as a Navy Seaman First Class in the South Pacific and Okinawa, earning the Bronze Star. Robert was married to Betty Hankenson.
April 15, 1957, he married Lois June Triggs in Dubuque. Most of his life, Robert was a self-employed painter/carpenter, but had also worked for Riucker Painting of Decorah. He had worked as a deck hand on river barges, and did some commercial fishing and clamming in the Lansing area.
Robert was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife June,; two daughters, Pamela and her husband Dick Engstrom of Las Lunas, NM, and Gail Haddix of Alexandria, LA; three brothers and their wives, Merlin and Alice of Lisbon, Norbert and Loretta of Lansing, and Milton and Lorna of LaCrosse, WI; a sister, Gladys Triggs of Waukon; eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Arnold, Lawrence and Carl; a sister Beverly Strong, and a grandson.
Honorary bearers were Glenda and Greg Smith, Linda and Joe Hess, Mike and Stacey Triggs, Cheryl and Mark Martins, Ronald Strong and all other nieces and nephews.
