Wilma Cowell, 95, of Monona, died Thursday morning, March 20, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Center, Postville, following a long illness. Funeral services were held Monday, March 24 at the Garden City United Methodist Church, Monona, with Rev. Dennis Gilbert officiating. Burial was in the Monona Leonard Funeral Home in Monona assisted the family with arrangements. Wilma Merle was born July 11, 1907, on the family farm near Monona to John and Effie (Leas) Melcher. She attended Linton #2 Country School on Big Foot Road through the eighth grade. She was united in marriage to David Cowell on November 4, 1925, in Waukon. Seven children were born to this union. They lived on the same farm until they moved to Monona in 1959. Wilma was a typical hardworking farm wife who helped with the farm chores. She loved gardening, raising chickens and geese, canning, making quilts, and baking bread, cinnamon rolls, sour cream raisin pies, and elderberry pies. She would share them with everyone. She is survived by a son, George (Joanne) Cowell of Storm Lake; a daughter, Marcella (Kenneth) Wendel of Postville; a daughter-in-law, Carol Cowell of La Crescent, Minn.; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; four brothers, Arden (Donna) Melcher of Cedar Rapids, Vernon (Bunny) Melcher of Waukon, Noel (Marceine) Melcher of Burlington, Wash., and Ivan (Donna) Melcher of Monona; and a sister, Joan McCraney of Evansdale. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband David; two sons, Duane and Bruce; three infant daughters, Maxine, May, and Julia; a grandson, Dwight Cowell; four brothers, Lester, Glenn, Carl, and John; and two sisters, Amelia Walsh and Arlene Hillesheim. Honorary casketbearers were Tom Cowell, Dave Cowell, Bruce Snively, Roger Redig, Ron Kurelo, Dennis Bahls, Chris Horn, and Scott Franzose. Casketbearers were Susan Snively, Pat Redig, Diane Kurelo, Sandra Bahls, Wendy Horn, and Sara Franzose.

She is survived by a son, George (Joanne) Cowell, Storm Lake; a daughter, Marcella (Kenneth) Wendel, Postville; a daughter-in-law, Carol Cowell, La Crescent, MN; nine grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; four brothers, Arden (Donna) Melcher, Cedar Rapids, Vernon (Bunny) Melcher, Waukon, Noel (Marceine) Melcher, Burlington, WA and Ivan (Donna) Melcher, Monona; and a sister, Joan McCraney, Evansdale.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband David, on September 14, 2001; two sons, Duane on May 29, 1993 and Bruce on May 6, 1999; three infant daughters, Maxine, May and Julia; a grandson, Dwight Cowell in 1966; four brothers, Lester, Glenn, Carl and John; and two sisters, Amelia Walsh and Arlene Hillesheim.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM on Monday, March 24, 2003 at the Garden City United Methodist Church, Monona, with Rev. Denis Gilbert officiating. Burial will follow in the Monona City Cemetery, Monona. Friends may call from 3-8 PM on Sunday, March 23, 2003 at Leonard Funeral Home, Monona, where there wil be a prayer service at 7 PM. Friends may also call after 10 AM on Monday at the church.

Honorary Bearers: Tom Cowell, Dave Cowell, Bruce Snively, Roger Redig, Ron Kurelo, Dennis Bahls, Chris Horn and Scott Franzose.

Casket Bearers: Susan Snively, Pat Redig, Diane Kurelo, Sandra Bahls, Wendy Horn and Sara Franzose. Organist: Priscilla Miene.
