Althea M. Loven, 88, of Waukon, died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Sunday, March 16 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted with arrangements. Althea Magdalene Jacobson was born June 19, 1914, in Waterville, the daughter of Sander L. and Sophie (Torgerson) Jacobson. She was baptized and confirmed at the Waterville Lutheran Church and attended school in Waterville, graduating from Waterville High School in 1931. She was attending Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls when her father died and she returned to Waterville to care for her mother. Althea and her mother took in boarders, usually local teachers, for many years. In 1960, she moved to Waukon where she began work as a secretary for Veterans Memorial Hospital. Later, she served several years as office manager for Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. On July 19, 1964, she married Roy Phillip Loven at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. She was an active member of the women's organization and Sunday School program of Waterville Lutheran church, and after moving to Waukon, St. John's Lutheran Church. She was also active in community and civic groups in Waukon and served as a member of the Advisory Board for Good Samaritan Center. Althea enjoyed traveling, playing cards, and getting together and visiting with family and friends.
Survivors include two step-sons, Russell (Juanita) Loven of Guttenberg and Richard Loven of Waukon; four step-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy; and a step-great-granddaughter, Annika Ahlberg. Honorary casketbearers were Walter and Gloria Larson, Lynn and John Morrow, and Paul and Wendy Ebner. Casketbearers were Scott, Thomas, and John Loven, Randy Goeke, Herb Surom, Justin Landsom, Robert Ruen, Carlton Christianson, and Wayne Leidahl.
