Leonard Junior Snitker, 75, of Rossville, died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at his home following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 15 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon with Rev. Larry Gander officiating. Burial with graveside military rites was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted with arrangements.
Leonard Junior Snitker was born July 13, 1927, in Ludlow Township, rural Waukon, the son of Leonard LeRoy and Wilhemina "Minnie" (Flage) Snitker. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem UCC and attended Ludlow #9 and Postville High School. Following school, he farmed for area farmers for a time before serving in the U.S. Army from 1946-1947.
He returned home after the service and on February 18, 1948, was married to Phyllis Snitker. He continued farming for area farmers as well as with Phyllis' parents, Henry and Iva Snitker. He also worked for Rogness Sawmill for several years and later as an operator for Northern Engraving in Waukon for 20 years. Junior was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed hunting in his younger days, did some woodworking, and liked to mow and care for his lawn. He was well known in the area for making horseradish. He also enjoyed playing cards and visiting with his friends as well as spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife Phyllis of Rossville; a daughter, Terri (Glenn) Krueger of Waukon; a son, Greg (Shirley) of Waukon; a daughter-in-law, Jane A. Snitker of Waukon; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, LaVonne (Wayne) Brandt of Frankville and Jane C. Snitker of Waukon; five brothers, Lloyd (Joyce) Snitker of Frankville, David (Janet) Snitker of Rossville, DuWayne (Laurayne) Snitker of Waukon, Earl (Mary Lou) Snitker of Oceanside, Calif., and Dennis (Patty) Snitker of Newport Richie, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Loretta Snitker of Waukon, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and parents-in-law; a son, Michael; a grandson, Jason Berg; and two brothers, Donald and infant LeRoy. Honorary casketbearers were Kari Beth, Sarah, and Ethan Krueger, Kasha Compton, Brandy and Justin Strub, Ashley Snitker, Kelly Smith, Daytona Miller, and Landon Mormon. Casketbearers were Kris Krueger, Andy Snitker, Jeremy and Jason Strub, Wyatt Compton, Zach Mormon, and Bill Stoeffle.©Waukon Standard 2003
