Norman James Rema was born June 7, 1925 on the rural Waterville farm of his parents, John T. Sr. and Clara S. (Kolsrud) Rema. He was baptized and confirmed at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church and attended Elon country school, rural Waterville. Norman served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947, serving some of his time in Germany.
Norman began farming, initially with his parents and other relatives. He and his twin brother, John, operated a saw mill for many years along with the farming operation. December 3, 1949, he married Ione Christianson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. In 1955, Norman and Ione moved to the home farm in Center Township, where they operated a dairy farm and raised crops, hogs and chickens.
Norman was a life-long member of Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and as an usher. He loved music and played the guitar with his brother, John, and some other local musicians in a band they called the “Offbeats”. They performed at Rainbow Gardens, community events at the Waterville Fire Station, and even private residences when they could get a group of friends together.
Sunday afternoons he and his family would go to the local airports, where they looked at the planes. Norman also enjoyed pitching horseshoes in Elon, fishing, coon hunting, snowmobiling, picnics under the maple tree, and attending local air shows and parades.
Survivors include his wife, Ione of Waterville; his children, Linda (Ray) Svendson of Des Moines, James Rema of La Crescent, MN and Cathy Rema of Waterville; two grandchildren, Chad (fiancee Kim Anderson) Svendson and Kara (Brandon) Lindsey; four great-grandchildren, Jace, Bain and Mali Svendson and Sven Lindsey; two sisters, Emeline Jeglum of Waukon and Florence (Milton) Lind of Phoenix, AZ.
