Gerald "Jug" Darling

Gerald Clement “Jug” Darling, 71, of New Albin died Saturday, September 4, 2010 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, WI after a four-year struggle with Lymphoma. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, September 8 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, New Albin. Father Daniel Knipper will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call at the New Albin Community Center Tuesday, September 7 beginning at 2 p.m. and concluding with a prayer service at 8 p.m. Friends may also call at the New Albin Community Center Wednesday, September 8 from 10 a.m. until departing for St. Joseph’s Catholic Church for the Mass. The family requests memorials in lieu of flowers. Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home of Caledonia, MN is in charge of arrangements.
Jug was born September 13, 1938 in New Albin, the fourth child of Melvin “Dag” and Mildred “Millie” (Henry) Darling. He was a 1957 graduate of New Albin High School. December 12, 1957, he married Karen Vickery at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, New Albin, and to this union six children were born.
Jug was a pillar of the community where he owned and operated Darling’s Service and Darling Motors for 52 years. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed going to car auctions, shopping at Farm & Barn, and going for country rides. Jug was also an avid NASCAR fan.
Survivors include his wife, Karen; five children, Todd (JoAnn) of Webster City, Tony (Lori) of New Albin, Tori (Keith) Behrendt of Lexington, NC, Shane (Karin) of Eitzen, MN, and Tim (Kris) of Holmen, WI; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five siblings, John “Jack” (Pat) of La Crosse, WI, Alvin “Bunk” (Vera) of New Albin, Rita (Larry) Lager of Las Vegas NV, and Mary (Lee) Lankford and Kathy (Lyle) Goetzinger, both of New Albin; and two very special nephews, Luke and Logan Thiele.
Jug was preceded in death by his parents; one son, James “Dar”; one granddaughter Breanne Darling; one sister, Carol (Don) Weber; and one brother, Rick Darling.
