Leo (Jerry) Cota

Leo G. (Jerry) Cota, age 89, of Lansing, long-time Harpers Ferry resident, died Sunday, August 29, 2010 at Thornton Heights Assisted Living in Lansing. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 1 at St. Ann's-St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry, with Fr. Donald Hawes, Msgr. Cletus Hawes, and Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial will be in Paint Rock Cemetery, Harpers Ferry. Visitation will take place Tuesday, August 31 from 3-7:30 p.m. at St. Ann's-St. Joseph's Church in Harpers Ferry. Hanson Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
Leo was born June 20, 1921 in Harpers Ferry, the son of William and Marie (Hawes) Cota. He married Mary Ann Evenson June 16, 1941 at St. Ann's-St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, from September 1942 to November 1944, he returned to Harpers Ferry, where he was a farmer and Pioneer Seed salesman for 40-plus years.
Leo loved the land, being a farmer all his life. He loved to hunt, do woodworking, play cards, and spend time with friends and family, and he enjoyed coffee with his early morning coffee group. He was a lifelong member of St. Ann's-St. Joseph's Catholic Church and a member of American Legion Post #722.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann; his children, Jim, Dick (Donna), Karen (Jerry) Boardman, Mary Jane (Jim) Connor, Jerry "Jake" (Donna), Betty Hogan, Tom (Joyce), and Connie (Chuck) Brown; his sisters, Regina (Mel) Jones, Shirley Scholte, Sister Lou Cota and Sister Kay Cota; and his brothers, Bob (Mary Lou) Cota and Rich (June) Cota.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Joey; his grandson, Ted Cota; his daughter-in-law, Shara Cota; his son-in-law, Bob Hogan; three great-granddaughters; his sister, Rose Foley; and his brother, Leon.
Casket bearers are John Cota, Bill Cota, Scott Boardman, PJ Connor, Rob Cota, Ryan Hogan, Jeff Cota and Mike Brown. Honorary casket bearers are Don Gavin, Ben Quillin, Mike Quillin, Raleigh Buckmaster, Mike Foley, Sally Kann, Ralph Welch, Jerry Donahue, Cletus Rooney, Pat Ward, Jim Bollman, Larry Donahue and Danny Hawes.
