Mrs. Beulah Smith

Good old "grandma Smith" as she was affectionately called by her many friends, dropped into her eternal sleep last evening so quietly and quickly that all was over before the family dreamed that death was among them. Mrs. Smith, who was the mother of T.C., S.O., W., Jackson and Jo. Smith, and Mesdames Young and Hale, had reached the ripe old age of 79 years on the 5th of this month, and for that age was in good health, and enjoyed a wonderful control of her faculties. Her daughters both live in the same house in the Fourth Ward, and since the death of her husband, the deceased has resided with Mrs. Young, and during that lady's absence in Waukon this summer has been cared for by her other daughter, Mrs. Hale and family. She was as well as usual last evening, and when put to bed at an early hour said she felt nice and comfortable, and would "sleep well"--her last words. In a few moments Mrs. Hale returned to the room, and hearing a gasp flew to her mother's bedside, only to find her spirit just departing. The old lady was almost reverenced by her large family, and though her old age should have prepared them for news of her death at any time, it will be a sad blow for them. Mrs. Smith will be buried in Oak Hill Cemetery but when the funeral will be held cannot be decided on until the absent members of the family are heard from.
