Leonard Stock

Leonard "L.R" Stock, 86, of Waukon, died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a brief illness.

Memorial services were held Monday, July 24, at 11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with the Rev. Lynn Groe officiating.

Burial of ashes was at Oakland Cemetery. Honorary bearers were Carl Christianson, Dick Elliott, Dave Hogendorn, Reuben Hager, Dick Loven and Walter Winke.

The Martin Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Leonard was born Aug. 27, 1913, on the family farm in Ludlow Township of Allamakee County. His parents were Edward and Wilhelmina (Fiet) Stock.

He attended Ludlow No. 5 rural elementary school and graduated from Waukon High School in 1931. Following graduation, he worked as a bookkeeper at Ludlow Dairy. In 1933 he moved to Waukon, where he served as assistant Allamakee County treasurer from 1933-40.

On May 18, 1937, he married Lois Caroline Bollman on the Stock family farm.

Leonard was a hardware dealer and from 1940-55 he operated Stock Hardware Store on West Main Street in Waukon. He sold Buick automobiles from 1955-59, before operating Peterson Bros. Hardware in Waukon from 1962-78. He also was involved with building the sales barn in Waukon.

Leonard was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Lodge, the Elks Lodge, and was a charter member and first president of the Waukon Jaycees. He had his private pilot's license and enjoyed flying for many years. He was an avid sports fan and particularly enjoyed following Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda (Jim) Matter of Fergus Falls, Minn., two sons, Wayne (Jill) Stock of New Albany, Ind., and Don (Cheri) Stock of Carona, Switzerland, five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one brother, Robert O. (Marion) Stock of Waukon.

Leonard Stock was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lois; and his sister, Gertrude Hansmeier.
