BROTHERS DIE IN LAFAYETTE FARM ACCIDENT
Brothers, Dayton E., 48, and Richard F., 28 Schellsmidt, both of rural Lansing, died of suffocation Wednesday, June 1, in an accident on their farm.
They were repairing a storage building when the ceiling collapsed and they were buried in shelled corn. They farmed together six miles south of Lansing.
The accident happened at about 11:30 a.m. The two men and their father Elmer were attempting to jack up a wooden ceiling when it gave way. According to Dr. Robert Love of Lansing, assistant Allamakee County medical examiner, the elder Schellsmidt heard the ceiling crack and managed to jump clear, but his two sons were buried in 800 bushels of corn.
Richard's wife Sharon, summoned help at the Robert Howe farm and the Leo Garin farm. Robert Howe, Vernon Ronnfeldt, Leo and Ray Garin and Mark Troendle rushed to the scene, but failed to get the men out of the huge pile of corn in time.
Love said the brothers died of suffocation. He pronounced them dead at the scene.
Dayton was born August 30, 1928 in Fairview township in Allamakee County. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Larry (Terry) Nierling of Spring Grove, Minn. and Vicki of Ames, IA.
