Jeanne E. Byrnes, 81, of Waukon, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at her son's home in Waukon following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 29 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. Joseph Schneider and Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Hanover Cemetery, rural Waukon. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Jeanne Elizabeth was born March 25, 1923, on a farm in the Hanover area of rural Waukon, the daughter of James and Elizabeth (McKenna) Delaney. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Hanover Catholic Church. Jeanne attended Hanover #4 Rural School, Immaculate Conception High School in Lansing, and graduated from Waukon High School in 1939.

On August 26, 1941, she married Clement A. Byrnes at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon. They farmed together in the Hanover area until moving to Waukon in 1975.

Jeanne also worked in food service at Waukon High School. For the past two and a half years, she has lived at Southridge Senior Village in Waukon. Jeanne was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Veterans Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Allamakee County Farm Bureau Women, and served as a volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul in Waukon. She loved spending time with her family and particularly enjoyed being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jeanne also liked traveling and enjoyed several bus tours as well as a cruise on the Mississippi River. She did a lot of handiwork and was good at sewing, knitting, and quilting. She was also an excellent baker. One of her favorite pastimes was playing cards with her family or some of her many friends.

Survivors include three daughters, Sharon Kobusch and Noreen (Vince) Koch, both of Cedar Rapids, and Connie (Mitch) Harmsen of Osceola, Iowa; two sons, Dale (Celeste) Byrnes of Ramseur, N.C., and Jim (Pat) Byrnes of Waukon; 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two nephews, Gail Casey and Dick Delaney.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Clement, who died in 1998; five grandchildren, Jared Byrnes and four infants; a son-in-law, Robert Kobusch; a sister, Mary Casey; and a brother, Pat Delaney. Casketbearers were her grandchildren, Heath and Dustin Byrnes, Robb and Chris Kobusch, Kim Watts, Karen Koch, Travis Bulman, and Brandon Harmsen.
