Elmer J. Ehde was born Feb. 19, 1913 to John and Mattie (Grotegut) Ehde on their farm in rural Waukon. He received his education in rural Allamakee County schools.

In 1937 Elmer married Leota Phipps. In 1959 he and Dorothy Coonfare were married. On Oct. 5, 1972 he married Hazel Fry at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon.

Elmer farmed in the Waukon area for several years before becoming a mechanic for Allis Chalmers and then Burg Implement before retiring. After that he mowed lawns and served as janitor at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon. He was a lifetime county resident and a member of Zion UCC.

Elmer died Sunday, Aug. 25, 1996 at Veterans Memorial Hospital; he was 83.

Surviving are his wife Hazel; two daughters, Lollie (Gary) Hirth, and Shirley Pausch, all of Waukon; three brothers: Orville Ehde and Galerd (Rosalie) Ehde, all of Waukon and Gordon (Shirley) Ehde of Stillwater, MN; two sisters: Marjorie (Oliver) Roderick of Waukon and Betty Nuehring of Decorah; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and four step-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister Lorraine Severson, a brother Verni Ehde, and two grandsons.

Funeral services have been set for 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29 at Zion UCC with the Rev. Richard Eick officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery with Martin Funeral home in charge of arrangements.

Visitation is Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at Martin's.

Casket bearers are Randy Pausch, Greg Hirth, Wayne Hirth, Jerry Hirth, Brent Hirth and Bill Fry.

Honorary bearers are Darrell Fry, Earl Fry, Elmer Johnson, Earl Gander, Roy Loven and Walter Winkie.
