Rites For Emmett F. Dougherty Are Held Here Friday

Funeral services were held Friday, November 12, at 9 a.m. from St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon for Emmett F. Dougherty, 77, long time court reporter for the 13th judicial district of Iowa. Mr. Dougherty died November 9 of cardiac failure after a final illness of about two weeks duration. He was born October 18, 1888 in Waukon to John F. and Catherine McGarrity Dougherty. He received his education in the local schools and the Gregg school of shorthand. On June 5, 1917, he married Francis Luth in Lansing. She survives as do two sons, W.E. (Bill) of Zelienople, Penn., and J.F. (Jim) of Garden City, Mich., and a daughter, Mrs. R.E. (Jeanne) McDonald, Waukon. A sister, Mrs. Will (Jeanette) Hegeman, and seven grandchildren also survive. Mr. Dougherty served as court reporter of the 13th judicial district for 40 years, serving first with Judge L.E. Fellows of Lansing. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus council in Waukon and the Waukon American Legion post, and was one of the founders of the Waukon Golf and Country Club. He was a veteran of World War I. The Rev. Joseph Slepicka of St. Patrick's Church of which Mr. Dougherty was a member, officiated at the services. Burial was in Mount Olivet cemetery. Pallbearers were John Campbell, Lloyd Kolsrud, Daniel Regan, Matthew Ryan, Ralph Sweeney, and Cyril Wiedner. Honorary pallbearers were from the Knights of Columbus, and the color guard was provided by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
