Keith M. Hastings, 86, of Waukon died Friday, May 7, 2010 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 11 at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon, with Pastor Tom Buresh officiating. Burial was at Zalmona Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Keith McKinley Hastings was born December 23, 1923 on a farm west of Waukon, the son of Chester Everett and Elsie (Kuester) Hastings. His family moved a lot when he was a child and Keith attended a number of different area country schools as well as Waterville High School.

July 18, 1954 he married Jean Gertrude Schmidt at Zalmona Presbyterian Church. Keith worked at a gas station in Waukon for a couple of years before beginning a long career as a sales clerk for menís clothing stores. He began at the B&B Clothing Store in Waukon, spent a few years at Jacobiís Clothing in Waukon, and then returned to the B&B. He took great pride in his work and also his appearance and was well known for his habit of wearing a nice suit every day, no matter what he was doing.

From a young age, Keith had an interest in electronics and radio. Although he didnít realize his dream of starting a radio station, he did spend many years as an avid CB and Ham radio operator. He also worked with Fred Fish setting up the sound system for numerous area events. Keith served as treasurer of St. Paulís United Methodist Church when he was a member there, and also for Oakland Cemetery. Since 1969 he has been a faithful member of Zalmona Presbyterian Church. Keith enjoyed music and starting in the late 1930s and continuing into the 1950s, he played guitar and banjo with his father, Chester, at many local house dances which were common at the time. Traveling with his family, mowing the yard, taking leisurely Sunday drives, and attending community events with Jean were some of Keithís other favorite pastimes.

Survivors include his two sons, Kevin of Waukon and Kendall (Jennifer) of Mendham, NJ; two grandchildren, Colin and Arianna; two sisters, Lila Ewing of Corvalis, OR and Sylvia Huffman of Waterloo; and a sister-in-law, Barb Hastings of Columbia, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jean, who died in 2008; a brother, Ronald; and two brothers-in-law, Neal Ewing and Cyril Huffman.

Casketbearers were Darrell and Ron Henning, Dave and Ken Kruger, Don Henningsgaard and Larry Snitker.
