Dorothy E. Schmidt, 92, of Waukon, died Wednesday, February 19, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, February 24 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted with arrangements. Dorothy Evaline Walter was born July 20, 1910, near Farmersburg, Iowa, to Ernest Henry and Clara (Henkes) Walter. She was baptized in the Methodist Church as a child and was confirmed in 1932 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Farmersburg. She attended elementary school and three years of high school in Farmersburg. She graduated from Monona High School in 1928. In the summer of 1928, she attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, and that fall, she began teaching country school in Clayton County. She was united in marriage to LeRoy Schmidt May 16, 1934, in Farmersburg. Dorothy and LeRoy farmed in Clayton and Allamakee Counties until 1991, when they moved to Waukon. Dorothy taught rural schools for five years in Clayton County and special classes in the Waterville, Harpers Ferry, and Waukon schools. She also continued her college education. Dorothy was a very active member of St. John's Lutheran Churches in Farmersburg and Waukon. She was a choir member for 45 years, a member of Ladies Circle, ALCW president and secretary, Sunday School teacher and superintendent, and made quilts for Lutheran World Relief. She was also a 4-H leader for many years in Jefferson Township and a talented painter. She traveled with LeRoy all over North America and Europe. They also spent eleven winters in Donna, Texas. Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Richardson of Winfield, Ill., and Corine Schmidt of Lynnwood, Wash.; two grandsons; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Florence (Edward) Klosterboer of Decorah; a sister-in-law, Lurene Walter of Postville; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, LeRoy, three brothers, and two sisters. Casketbearers were Rolf and Eric Richardson, James Jonson, and Pastor James, John, and Jana Klosterboer. Memorials may be made in Dorothy's honor to St. John's Lutheran Church or the Waukon Good Samaritan Center.
