Mrs. Fred Gruhn Interred Monday

Mrs. Fred Gruhn, nee Elsa Schaar was born on February 21, 1891 in Berlin, Germany, the daughter of Carl Schaar and his wife Augusta Topel Schaar. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Germany. She passed away at her home on October 7, 1960 at the age of 69 years, seven months, and 16 days.
She was married to Frederick Gruhn in Germany on March, 22, 1909. Her husband died in 1945. To this union were born nine children, five daughters and four sons. She came to this country from Dansig, Germany in 1923, accompanied by her four oldest children. They joined their father, who had preceded them a short time earlier. They farmed in this area following their arrival.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Frederick William and one son who died in infancy, two brothers, Herman and Carl of Germany; and one sister, Elizabeth Seidler of West Germany.
She is survived by five daughters, Martha, Mrs. Andrew Csillag of Brooklyn, New York, Anna, Mrs. Herman Hartman of Hillside Lake, New York, Lottie, Mrs. Thomas Keen of Milltown, New Jersey, Edith, Mrs. Nick Clesi of Queens, New York, and Gretchen, Mrs. Davis Buddenberg of Castalia; two sons Paul of Waterloo, and Robert of Postville; one sister, Freida Henius in West Germany, and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted in St.Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Postville on October 10. Burial was in Postville cemetery.
