Leo Eugene Foley was born August 13, 1920 on the rural Harpers Ferry farm of his parents, James and Mary (Tracy) Foley. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Paint Rock Catholic Church, attended rural Harpers Ferry elementary school, and graduated from Harpers Ferry High School.
June 8, 1944 he married Rose Cota at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry. Leo and Rose farmed the Foley family farm for many years, operating a small dairy herd and raising beef cattle, hogs, and grain. They retired from the farm and moved to Waukon in the late 1980s.
Leo was a member of Knights of Columbus and the church choir at St. Joseph’s Church. He enjoyed collecting toy tractors and miniature steam engines, which he put on wagons and displayed in special event parades throughout the area. He also enjoyed traveling and loved to fly. Leo was proud of his Irish heritage and visited Ireland twice. Most of all, he looked forward to getting together and visiting with family and friends at community and social events.
Survivors include his four children, William (Connie) Foley of East Lansing, MI, Rose Ann (Reuben) Lopez of Apple Valley, MN, Michael (Cindy) Foley of Harpers Ferry, and Jean (Gary) Christianson of Maplewood, MN; 13 grandchildren, Jeff, David, Ryan, Adam, and Jim Foley, Bob Lopez, Seth, Hans, and Cody Christianson, Shayna Martinson, Rosalia Carson, Rebecca Collins, and Carrie Estes; and 28 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rose; a son, Donald Leo; a sister, Mary Nagel; and a brother, Regis Foley.
His granddaughters served as honorary casket bearers and his grandsons were casket bearers.
