Thomas T. Troendle, 68, of Harpers Ferry died Friday, April 9, 2010 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon after a long battle with lung cancer. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 14 at 11 a.m. at St. Ann’s-St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry, with Fr. Louis Trzil and Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial will be at Old East Paint Creek Cemetery, Waterville.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 13 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 4 p.m. scripture service, and again for one hour before the service at the church Wednesday.
Thomas Theodore Troendle was born August 16, 1941 in La Crosse, WI. He was the oldest son of Ted and Minnie (Peterson) Troendle. Tom grew up on a farm in Center Township in rural Lansing. He attended country school at Drake School in Village Creek. Later he attended Immaculate Conception School and graduated from St. George High School in Lansing in 1959.
May 11, 1963 he married Betty Bulman at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing. After high school he worked putting in phone lines throughout Iowa and Wisconsin. Returning to Allamakee County, he worked many years at the local creameries in Waukon and Churchtown. In 1980 he decided to farm full time milking cows on his farm by Waterville. In 2004 he retired from the dairy operation but continued to enjoy farm life and the joy it brought to him. He also liked traveling in his retirement and went on many trips with his wife, Betty.
Tom was an active 4-H leader, a member of the Allamakee County Fair Board, the rural fire board for Waterville, and a Center Township Trustee for many years. He valued his church, family, and his community. Tom was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing and hunting. Even after his retirement he maintained an active interest in the farm and how his sons were doing.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Betty Troendle; his four children, Ron (Susan), Glenn, and Darrell (Amy) Troendle, and Teresa (Mike) Brown; 11 grandchildren, Nick, Ted, Blake, Taylor, Caitlin, Mike, Corey, Ben, and Cheyanne Troendle, and Alex and Logan Brown; one great-grandchild, Ryan James; his mother, Minnie Troendle; two brothers, Jerry (Norma) and Bob (Kay) Troendle; a sister, Bonnie (Leon) Mohn; his mother-in-law, Edna Bulman; a sister-in-law, Jean Buntrock; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ted; a niece, Marsha Kay Troendle; a nephew, Larry Troendle; his father-in-law, Eldon Bulman; and two brothers-in-law, Robert Promnitz and Dale Buntrock.
Casketbearers are Herb Dehli, Bob Mathis, Mark and Paul Promnitz, Daric Steiber, and Brian Troendle. Honorary casket bearers are his grandchildren and great-grandchild.
