James H. Thorsten, 71, of Waukon, died Sunday, January 26, 2003, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon following a sudden illness. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 29, at 11:00 a.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn Groe officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. James Herman Thorsten was born July 14, 1931, in Churchtown, the son of James William and Helena (Weber) Thorsten. He attended rural elementary schools and graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Lansing in 1950. On October 1, 1955, he married Carolyn Troendle at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing, Jim and Carolyn farmed near Churchtown until moving to Waukon in 1970. Following that, he hauled grain for Roger Quandahl Trucking for 10 years until disability forced his retirement. Jim liked mechanical things and enjoyed working with machinery and cars. He also enjoyed his work very much, both on the farm and trucking. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn of Waukon; four daughters, Gena (Kendall) Luchtenburg of Allison, Iowa, Deborah (Bruce) Johnson of Greene, Iowa, Phyllis Ali of Waukon, and Nancy (Doug) Day of Cedar Park, Texas; five sons, Daniel of West Union, and Bill, Bob (Dawn), Bruce, and Jason, all of Waukon; seven grandchildren; one brother, John (Elinor) of Churchtown; and three sisters, Margaret (Bob) Ferring of Lansing, Mary Levendoski of Stoddard, Wis., and Elizabeth Hawes of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Tina. Casket bearers are Daniel, Bill, Bob, Bruce, and Jason Thorsten and Doug Day.©Waukon Standard 2003
