Howard Louis Gordanier, son of Horace and Ella (Meyer) Gordanier, died Monday, Nov. 11 at Community Memorial Hospital in Postville.

A memorial service was conducted Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, by Pastor Julius Peterson. The body was cremated. Schutte Funeral Service, Postville, was in charge of arrangements.

He was born Dec 23, 1918 on a farm in Post Township in Allamakee County. He was baptized Feb. 11, 1919 at St. Paul Lutheran Church and attended the Lybrand School north of Postville.

During WW II he served in the U.S. Navy as a Gunner's Mate 2/c. He was aboard the USS Maddox when it was sunk during the Invasion of Sicily.

August 3, 1947 he was married to Rosamond Eckstein at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Waverly. The couple had 2 daughters. They have lived their entire life in Postville where Howard owned and operated Gordanier Cleaners for 42 years. He retired in 1981 and sold the business to John and Elaine Meyer.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Opal Gordanier.

Surviving are his wife, Rosemaond, 2 daughters, Beth (Mrs. Darrell Berge) of Spring Lake Park, MN and Hope (Mrs. Phillip Anderson) of Winona, MN, 5 grandchildren: Gregory and Keely Berge and Maisi, Jordan and Blake Anderson; his step-mother, Sarah Gordanier of Postville and 3 sisters: Bernice McCaffrey of Sylmar, CA, Murtis (Mrs. Andrew Smith) of Waterloo and Violet (Mrs. Robert Sherburne) of Sumner.
