Horace Gordanier, Businessman, Dies
Horace P. Gordanier, 61, Postville businessman for many years, passed away Friday morning following a heart attack suffered the previous night, aged 61 years. Funeral services held Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock in the Schutte Funeral Home, were conducted by Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig, Pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Interment was in the Postville cemetery.
Mr. Gordanier had been in the dry cleaning business here since 1935, first with his son, Howard, the latter taking over active management about five years ago. He was active in civic affairs throughout his business life in Postville.
Horace Philip Gordanier was born April 15, 1889, near Hardin in Allamakee county, the son of Philip Gordanier and Permillia Segrist Gordanier, and this community has always been his home.
He was united in marriage with Ella Ida Wilhelmina Meier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Meier of Postville on March 25, 1918, and the couple lived on a farm near Bethel, five miles northeast of Postville, until Mrs. Gordanier passed away, aged 37 years, on December 30, 1934. To this union were born five children, Howard, who now lives in Postville; Bernice (Mrs. Francis McCaffrey) of San Fernando, California; Opal Gordanier of Postville, and Murtis and Violet Gordanier of Iowa City.
On April 18, 1946, Mr. Gordanier was married to Sarah Stinson of Decorah, and she, together with the above mentioned children survive. Other relatives surviving him are three granddaughters, Mary Beth and Patricia Ann McCaffrey of California, and Beth Elaine Gordanier of Postville; three sisters and one brother, Mrs. Viola Leet of Waukon; Mrs. Pearl E. Richards of LaCanada, California; Mrs. Cecil Uhl of Waukon, and Lynn Gordanier of Kalamazoo, Michigan. His parents, two sisters and his first wife preceded him in death.
Mr. Gordanier was a veteran of World War I, serving in the U.S. Army, and for about one year saw service with the American expeditionary forces in France.
