Walter J. Gelo, 85, of Postville, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Waukon, IA, with Pastor Danny Volbrecht officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Waukon.
Walter James Gelo was born on Feb. 9, 1915 in Churchtown, IA, the son of Fred and Emma (Wendler) Gelo. He attended Parochial School in Lansing. In his early years he lived in the Churchtown and Lansing area before he and his family moved to Jefferson Township. On June 8, 1941 he married Dorothy Barr at St. Patrick's Rectory in Waukon. After Walter and Dorothy were married they farmed in the Postville area. Walter accepted the Lord as his personal savior in 1956. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and while he was a member he served as a deacon and taught Sunday School for several years. He enjoyed reading the Bible and started a Bible study group in his home. Walter enjoyed traveling, fishing, hunting and electric trains. He also enjoyed planting many different types of trees over the years.
He is preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, George and Arthur Gelo, a sister, Alice Beall and a daughter-in-law, Connie Gelo. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Postville, 3 sons, Larry (JoAnn) of Waukon, Gordon of Ray, MN, and Jim (Cathy) of Postville, 4 daughters, Shelby (Edwin) Erickson of Apple Valley, MN, Linda (Dwayne) Johnson of Elgin, Kristie (Paul) Roeder of Decorah, Diane (Dale) Roney of Waukon, 22 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, a brother Joe (Jacquie) Gelo of Sandy, UT, 2 sisters, Marian McGraw of Charlotte, NC, and Margaret Hawk of Ormand Beach, FL.
Honorary casket bearers were Edwin Erickson, Dwayne Johnson, Paul Roedeer and Dale Roney. Casket bearers were Shayne, Shawn and Rhett Gelo, Stanley Erickson, Travis Thornton, and Brian Johnson.
