Vernon "Tater" Verdine Glawe 1918-2001

Vernon "Tater" V. Glawe, 82, of Monona, died Fri., March 23, 2001, at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Mon., March 26 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Monona with Rev. Christopher Staley officiating. Burial with military rites was held in Oakland Cemetery.

Vernon Verdine Glawe was born on April 9, 1918, on his parents' farm in rural Farmersburg. His parents were Theodore W. and Emma (Lemke) Glawe. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Farmersburg and graduated from Farmersburg High School in 1935.

On Oct. 14, 1939, he married Hazel Viola Berger in Waukon. He served in the U. S. Marine Corps from 1944-1946, where he was a member of the 5th Marine Battalion. He served in the South Pacific and participated in the Occupation of China.

Vernon farmed and was a milk hauler for Swiss Valley Creamery in Luana. After retiring as a milk hauler, he worked for Swiss Valley in their plant. He was a member of the AmVets, American Legion, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He enjoyed being with family and friends. He was particularly fond of following his children's activities while they were in school. Vernon was an avid Hawkeye fan and enjoyed playing cards.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one son, Graham; and a step-sister, Marinette Oleson. Survivors include his wife, Hazel, of Monona; one son, Stanly (Kathy) of Des Moines; two daughters, Christine (Kevin) Krambeer of Southlake, TX, and Cynthia (David) Angerer of Holland, MI; seven grandchildren, Tracy, Tammy, and Kirk Glawe, Shery Maddox, Gregory and Katie Krambeer, and Erik, Alex, and Keegan Angerer; three great grandchildren, Samuel, Sarah, and Kallen Glawe; and a step-sister, Donna (Kenneth) Radloff of Farmersburg.

Martin Funeral Home of Waukon assisted the family.
