Roger Alvin Henry Meyer 1940-2010

Roger Alvin Henry Meyer, 69, Postville, Iowa, died Wednesday, January 27, 2010, at his home following a sudden illness. Roger was born on September 25, 1940, in Bloomfield Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, to Willard and Florence (Schroeder) Meyer. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa. He attended country school in Grand Meadow Township and graduated from Postville High School. Roger attended auctioneering school at Mason City. He also worked as a plumber and an electrician, and then as a lineman for the REC.

Roger was united in marriage to Laura Jones on October 2, 1966. Two children were born to this union. They farmed together until Laura passed away on December 15, 1996. Roger was later united in marriage to Eunice Heisler on January 3, 1998. After retiring from farming, Roger enjoyed blacksmithing, gardening, cooking and baking.

Roger took pride in his farm and took care of the land for future generations. He could build or repair anything and loved to work in his shop. Over the years he served on the Marion Church Council, Clayton County Extension Council, was a founding member of the Quality Pork Marketing group, and a board member of Upper Iowa Coop.

Survivors include his wife, Eunice Meyer, Postville; two children, Eric (Tina) Meyer, Postville, Eva (Mike) Henderson, Manchester; five grandchildren, Conner Meyer, Emilie Meyer, Sarah Henderson, Dawn Henderson, Leah Henderson; one step-daughter, Amy (Dean) McGraw, Independence; one step-granddaughter, Abby McGraw and four siblings, Donna (Albert) Ashbacher, Frankville, Byron (Eileen) Meyer, Postville, Bruce (Donna) Meyer Waukee, Michelle (Matt) Hurlbut, West Union and also by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Roger was preceded in death by his first wife, Laura and his parents Willard and Florence.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2010, at 10:30 am at Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder, Iowa. The Rev. Marshall Hahn will officiate. Burial will follow in the Marion Lutheran Cemetery in Gunder, Iowa.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 29, 2010, from 4-8 at Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Postville, Iowa, and one hour before services at the church.
