Funeral services for Alma Gunderson were held Wednesday, August 5, 1987, 10:00 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. The Rev. Julius L. Peterson will officiate. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville is in charge of arrangements. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery.

Alma Gunderson, daughter of Carl and Betsy (Halstenson) Christianson, was born May 22, 1896 in Wagner Township, Clayton County, Iowa. She died Sunday, August 2, 1987 at the Good Samaritan Center, Postville, Iowa.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Norway Lutheran Church at St. Olaf, Iowa. Alma attended the rural schools of Clayton County.

November 18, 1920 she was married to Ralph O. Gunderson at the Lutheran Parsonage in St. Olaf. They had 7 children. They lived on a farm in the St. Olaf area until 1943 when they moved to a farm south of Postville. In 1952 Alma purchased the J. Sorenson house in Postville where she lived until 1983. She became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in 1984. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ralph, who died in 1950, a grandson, Jerry Garcia, a great-grandson, Greg Bente, a great-granddaughter who died in infancy, 4 brothers, Thomas, Knudt, Henry and Edwin Christianson and 4 sisters, Nellie Landsgard, Gunda Seely and Julia Peterson and Annie, who died in infancy.

Surviving are 3 sons, Arnold (Kay) Gunderson and Dean (Clarian) Gunderson, all of Postville, Ralph (Janet) Gunderson, of Fairbanks; 4 daughters, Ruby (Mrs. Quentin Torkelson) of Farmersburg, Doris (Mrs. Lloyd Nidert) of Waterloo, Fern (Mrs. Bernard Thompson) of Nevada City, CA and Betty (Mrs. Duane Holm) of Tripoli; 25 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Margaret Christianson of Wauzeka, WI and several nieces and nephews.

Prior to 1944 Alma had been a member of the Norway Lutheran Church and the ALCW. She became a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and was active in the LCW. She was also a member of VFW Auxiliary in Postville.

Casket bearers were Roger Torkelson, Gary Gunderson, Dennis Niedert, Spencer Holm, Randall Gunderson and Alan Gunderson.
