Mary M. Kewley, 89, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Waukon, died Saturday, January 11, 2003, at Bickford Cottage in Cedar Falls following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Monday, January 13 at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Rev. Larry Olson officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted with arrangements. Mary Melissa Grimm was born October 20, 1913, in Waukon, the daughter of Bert and Lela (Cummens) Grimm. She was baptized and confirmed at First Presbyterian Church, attended elementary school in Waukon, and graduated from Waukon High School in 1931. She graduated from Waukon Junior College in 1933 and the University of Iowa in 1936 with a degree in nursing. On December 29, 1937, she married Elmer G. Kewley at Mary's parents' farm in rural Waukon. They lived in Earlham, Clinton, and Cotter before moving back to Waukon in 1950, where they farmed for several years. Mary moved to Cedar Falls in 1999 to be closer to her daughters. Mary was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Waukon where she participated in ladies circle and served as a Deacon, Elder, and Sunday School Teacher. She was also a member of the Search Light study group. Mary was an accomplished seamstress and also did knitting and crocheting. She enjoyed playing bridge and spending time with her family. Survivors include two daughters, Lois Ann (Bob) Klatt and Margaret Coleman both of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer; and a sister, Lois A. Grimm. Honorary casket bearer was Dave Flage. Casket bearers were Wayne Sawyer, Dan Otting, Merlin Kruger, Dan Lommell, Jack Thompson, and Brett Klatt.
