Waterville Postmaster Passes Away Sunday

John Slattery, 59, of Waterville died at his home Sunday evening following a several weeks illness, during which time he was a patient at St.Francis hospital, LaCrosse. He was brought home Decoration Day and has since been cared for at his home by his wife and only sister, Miss Mayme Slattery.

He was born on a farm near Waterville, Nov. 4, 1891, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Slattery, early settlers there. He was educated in the Waterville school and was engaged in farming until 10 years ago when he was appointed Postmaster at Waterville.

On June 18, 1918 his marriage to Miss Mary Mullaney of Waukon took place at St.Patrick's church in this city.

He is survived by his widow and an only son Emmet H.M-lc of the U.S. Navy and stationed at the naval hospital in Philadelphia, Pa., and who arrived the last of the week called by his critical illness. He is also survived by two brothers, Larry of Waterville and William of Waukon and an only sister, Miss Mayme also of Waukon.

His oldest son Paschal, Coxswain in the Navy, died in the navy hospital at Corona, Calif., from wounds received while serving in action at Guadalcanal in June, 1944, during World War II. A brother Paschal Slattery was killed by a sniper in France during World War I.

The remains reposed at the family home until this (Wednesday) morning when funeral services were held at St.Pius Church, Cherry Mound. A Requiem Mass was celebrated by the pastor, Father R. Krapfl. Interment was made in the family lot in the nearby cemetery.
