Aged War Veteran Dies at Waukon
Waukon, Iowa, Jan 28 - John M. Dowling, aged 79, a veteran of the civil war, died at his home at French Creek Sunday. Death resulted from old age. Mr. Dowling was born in Somersetshire, England, February 4, 1836, coming to America when a young man with his brother. In 1855 he came to Allamakee county. In 1859, when the demand for enlistment was made he joined the federal cause at Lansing, serving three years in the war. Mr. Dowling was in the siege of Vicksburg and other memorable battles, and was fond of telling of harrowing experiences which he went through. He was discharged from duty in Memphis, Tenn. The funeral took place Tuesday at his home, Rev. Van Nice of the Presbyterian church conducted the services.~LaCrosse Tribune, January 28, 1915
