Eleanor J. Flynn Dies In Missouri

Miss Eleanor Jeanne Flynn, 84, who was born in Postville, died at Bethesda General Hospital, St. Louis, Nov. 18. She has donated her body to the Department of Anatomy, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, from which her late brother, Charles Henry Flynn, M. D., graduated.

Miss Flynn was a daughter of Dr. Charles Henry Flynn, who practiced in Postville for about 25 years, until his death in December, 1914. Her mother had died about 2½ years earlier.

She graduated from the Postville High School in 1912, and remained at home to keep house for her father, small brother and three younger sisters. In the fall of 1914 she taught country school about 1½ miles out of town, remaining in Postville to finish the school year, although her brothers and sisters had moved to St. Paul to live with their oldest sister, who was married.

She then continued with her academic and professional training, dropping out to teach when necessary. She received a Kindergarten-Primary certificate from Mankota, Minnesota State Teachers College in 1917. In 1923, she received her Bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin, with majors in sociology and economics. Two years later she returned to the university to earn her Masters degree in those fields and was elected in 1926 to Phi Beta Kapa, the national honorary scholastic society, as well as to other professional societies. In 1936 she received her Ph.D. degree from the University of Chicago, School of Social Service Administration, followed later by additional professional courses at New York School of Social Work. Dr. Flynn taught for a number of years in various colleges in the east.

During World War II she returned to St. Louis, where her oldest sister was then living. Until her retirement in 1960 she was Home Service Consultant of Midwestern Area American National Red Cross, which involved extensive traveling. She often remarked how fortunate she was to have been born just before the turn of the century in a friendly small Iowa town.

A memorial service was held at the Webster Groves Presbyterian Church, St. Louis County, Mo., Tuesday, Nov. 27. She is survived by a sister, Margaret Flynn Todd, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
