Marlana (Otterbeck) Howes Lalli ended her long fight with cancer November 22, 2009.
Marlana was born in Strawberry Point and raised in northeast Iowa. She worked for the Sheridan Law firm in Waukon after her graduation from MacGregor High School.
Marlana married Richard Howes and lived most of her adult life in the Des Moines area. She spent her early work years as a realtor, but found her true calling as a substance abuse counselor. Marlana worked at the Powell 3 Chemical Dependency Center, the Betty Ford Center in Palm Springs, the Harold Hughes Recovery Center, and many of her past years as the Director of the Fort Des Moines OWI Treatment Program.
Marlana was a 32-year friend of Bill W. and her greatest joys came to her from her friends in that community, her family, her work and her pets.
Marlana is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kristin and Mike Schweiger; and her grandson, James Calland, Jr.
Memorials can be provided for Powell 3 Chemical Dependency Association, Des Moines Area Central Office, the Alano Society, or the Animal Rescue League.
