Dale Henry Hesse was born May 19, 1929 in rural Waukon, the son of Simon August and Anna Louise (Snitker) Hesse. He attended the rural Helming Elementary School and graduated from Waukon High School in 1948. In 1953 he was drafted and served two years in the U.S. Army, seeing some of his duty in Germany. Following his discharge he returned to work the Union Prairie Township family farm. He operated a dairy herd and raised hogs and grain. Dale continued to live on the farm until December of 2006, when he moved to Southcrest in Waukon. Since May of 2009 he has been a resident of Makee Manor in rural Waukon.

Dale was active in the Gideon Society. It was special to him to hand out Bibles and he enjoyed the regular prayer breakfasts. He was also active in the local chapter of VFW. Dale was a life-long member of Zalmona Presbyterian Church. His church was very important to him. He had a love for his Lord and Savior and whenever you visited him you would find his Bible and devotion book on the table, open to the devotion for the day. Dale also enjoyed being with people. He was a regular attendee of community events, liked to go to sales and auctions, and loved to visit with his friends.

Survivors include his sister, Elaine (Carl) Tangen of Estherville; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Bernice Lenth; and a nephew, Curt Tangen.
