Elizabeth “Betty” Margaret Hill was born April 30, 1926 in McGregor, the daughter of Louis and Lelia (Cahoon) Knight. She was baptized at First Methodist Church in McGregor and confirmed later in her life at Glenwood Lutheran Church in rural Decorah. Betty attended McGregor area rural schools. Following school she did housekeeping for several area families, helped her mother at home, and worked as a nurse’s aid at the McGregor Hospital and at a factory in Decorah.

March 30, 1947 she married Howard Irvin Hill at the Glenwood Lutheran Church Parsonage. Betty and Howard farmed in Hanover Township of Allamakee County from 1949 until 1960. She was active in all aspects of the farm. In the early 1960s she worked at the turkey plant in Postville and for Northern Engraving in Waukon as well as being a nurse’s aid at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.

In 1980 they moved back to Waukon and operated the Riverview Restaurant in McGregor and Ma and Pa’s Café in Lansing until 1984. Betty also did a lot of baking for people, including area grocers and restaurants.

Betty was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and Ladies Circle. She enjoyed raising flowers and a big garden, canning and freezing much of her produce. She did beautiful quilting and embroidery work and enjoyed fishing, camping and playing cards and games. She appreciated her care since moving to the Good Samaritan Center and had grown very close to the staff. Betty used her life as an example of unselfishly helping others and giving unconditional love to her family and friends.
