Former Publisher Dies In Arizona

William J. Klingbeil, long-time Postville resident and a former publisher of the Postville Herald, died August 23 in Mesa, Arizona, where he had resided since 1961. Funeral services were held Monday, August 27, in the Melcher Mortuary in Mesa.

Mr. Klingbeil first came to Postville in 1914 and bought an interest in the Volksblatt, a German-language newspaper. On June 1, 1918, he purchased the paper from Paul Ronneburger and changed the language from German to English and the name to the Postville Herald. He served as publisher until 1948 when he sold the paper to Clifford DeGarmo and Fred Martin. After his retirement he was associated with John Falb in business. While in Postville he was active in community affairs, serving on the school board, in the Commercial Club, Kiwanis Club, the Masonic and Odd Fellow lodges. He was one of the founders and first president of the Northeast Iowa Press Association and a member of the Iowa Press Association. He was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston, Mass.

William Julius Klingbeil was born January 20, 1893, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, the son of Julius and Augusta Bredlau Klingbeil. He was married to Eltha Thoma of Postville June 15, 1916. He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Eulalia (Mrs. William H. Seiler) of Emporia, Kan. and Kathryn (Mrs. John Ashmore) of Cedar Rapids; three grandsons and two great grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Otto of Hoquiam, Wash., and Arthur of Mesa, and three sisters, Mrs. Emma Holtshopple and Erma (Mrs. Wilbur Hixson) of Monroe, Wis., and Mrs. Frieda Schwartzlow of Delafield, Wis.

The Klingbeils had been living at 2155 East Birchwood Ave., Mesa, Arizona.
