Obituary – Joseph T. Whalen

The sudden death of Joseph T. Whalen which occurred last Tuesday at his farm in Lafayette township was briefly mentioned in the Journal of March 6th. He was found dead by his brother Robert in the farm yard when the latter looked for him after he failed to show up for dinner. Both owned separate farms and lived alone but always ate their noon meal together.

He was born March 29th, 1903 in Lafayette, a son of Katherine Bohrer and Thomas Whalen, both deceased many years, the latter in the early thirties. An only sister at the age of 13 also preceded him in death and the only immediate survivor is his brother. He belonged to the Mens Catholic Order of Foresters.

The funeral services were held on Friday morning from the Burke Funeral Chapel to Immaculate Conception Church in Wexford of which he was a lifelong member. Father Robert Rahe offered the Mass of Requiem and said the final prayers at the family lot in the adjoining cemetery where interment was made. Honorary pall bearers from the Foresters were John P. Ferring, Dan Brennan, Norbert Guider, Frank O’Neill, Joe Troendle and Kenneth Peters. Active casket bearers included Hilary O’Neill, Ray Crowe, James Curran, Thomas Marley, Carl and Leo Mullarkey.
