Mary Manning Steffen (Dec 11, 1908 – April 24, 2006)

Obituary of Mary Manning Steffen in the April 2, 2006, Waukon Newspaper reads:

Mary Steffen, age 97, of Lansing, Iowa, died Monday morning April 24, 2006, at Thornton Manor in Lansing. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, April 26, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing with Reverend Daniel Knipper officiating. Burial was in the Wexford Immaculate Conception Cemetery in rural Lansing. Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing was in charge of arrangements.

Mary was born in Lafayette Township of Allamakee Count December 11, 1908, to James and Anna (Calvey) Manning.

She married Charles L. Steffen June 15, 1935, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Milwaukee, Wis.,

Mary worked for many years in Milwaukee for Caterpillar Manufacturing in the accounting department. She and her husband retired to Lansing in April of 1973, and together they did a lot of traveling. Mary was a long time member of the American Legion Auxiliary and did a lot of volunteer work at Thornton Manor. She enjoyed visiting and calling friends.

She is survived by a niece Eleanor Manning of Sharon, Pa., and Eleanor’s two children Joshua and Tara, as well as several cousins.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Charles L. Steffen, on October 15, 1995; her parents; two brothers, Frank and Vince; and a nephew, Tom Manning.

Linda Manning and the I.C. choir provided music.

Casketbearers were Ron White, Curt White, Jeff White, Mike Manning, Kevin Hogan, Ray Mullarkey, Jason Steiber, and Jerry Kernan.
