Anita Mae Martin
Anita M. Martin, 84, of Waukon, formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Memorial services were held Friday, August 28 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Waukon, with Rev. Richard Iles officiating.
Memorials may be directed to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Waukon, 27 Second Avenue NW, Waukon, IA 52172.
Anita Mae Martin was born March 29, 1925 in Storm Lake, the daughter of Harry and Elsie (Young) Prichard. After graduating from Storm Lake High School, Anita attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, and Buena Vista College in Storm Lake before graduating as a Registered Nurse from Kaehler School of Nursing in Rochester, MN.
She worked as an RN in Hawaii before returning to the states and marrying Dale Martin May 29, 1949 in Storm Lake. Anita worked as a RN at hospitals in Greeley, CO and Storm Lake, before taking time off to raise her four children and returning to part-time nursing in the early 1970s. After she and Dale retired, they moved from Sioux City, dividing their time between a home in Waukon and a lake home in northern Minnesota.
Although Nita had difficulty hearing, she could identify every bird by sound as well as sight. She spent hours watching the birds and urging Dale to devise creative ways to foil the squirrels, deer and bear who raided her many feeders. In addition to her passion for birds and wildlife, she also enjoyed gardening, knitting, reading, doing crossword puzzles, cryptograms and playing cards with her family. A fantastic cook, she was well-known for her cinnamon rolls, potato salad and hot fudge sauce.
Survivors include her husband, Dale of Waukon; her children, Janet (Mark) Moeller of Winona, MN, Patricia (Gary) Frederickson of Park Rapids, MN, John (Chris) Martin of Longmont, CO, and Jane (Richard) Behls of Arlington Heights, IL; nine grandchildren, Jennie Polson, Sarah Sommer, Anne, Peter and Sam Martin, Erin and William Behls, Valerie Urban, and Curtis Frederickson; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Peggy Darland of Cresco; and numerous grand-animals. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Robert Prichard; and three sisters, Patty Stull, Janet Titsworth and Polly Slife.
Honorary casketbearers were Anita’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
