Selma Neverman

Selma Neverman, daughter of Carl and Louise (Schultz) Wilke, was born on November 23, 1900 on her parent's farm in Hardin, Iowa. She died on August 3, 1994 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, Iowa. She was 93 years old.

She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Postville.

On December 18, 1920, Selma was married to Oscar R. Johnson in Waukon. To this union, ten children were born. He died in 1959. On December 10, 1966 she married Lester A. Neverman. He died in 1980.

Selma grew up in Hardin, near Luana, Iowa. She attended rural Allamakee County schools in the Hardin area. She farmed with her husband, Oscar, in rural Waukon. They moved to Waukon in 1954. Besides being a homemaker, in later years she worked at several cafes in Waukon, including the Soda Grill and Motel. She enjoyed family times, playing cards, crocheting and dancing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Louise Wilke; husband, Oscar Johnson; second husband, Lester Neverman; a son, Marland Johnson; an infant daughter, Helen Jean; a brother, William Wilke; two sisters, Ella Bruehahn and Nora Schroeder, and six grandchildren.

Surviving her are four daughters, Marnetta Snitker of Postville, Delores and Stanley Berg of Frankville, Norma and Jim Bloxham of Waukon, Dorothy and Gary Gress of Waukon, and six sons, Roger and Norma Johnson of Waukon, Dale and Beverly Johnson of Waukon, Dean and Delores Johnson of Waukon, LaVern and Jeanette Johnson of Postville, Keith and Darlene Johnson of Elgin, DuWayne and Linda Johnson of Elgin. Also surviving are five stepchildren: Claire Neverman of Jesup, Maurice Neverman of Watertown, Wisc., Earl Neverman of Waukon, Ardis Johnson of St. Paul, Minn. and Wanda Anderson of Waukon; two sisters, Bertha Kruse of Waukon and Edna Harnack of Postville; 44 grandchildren, 79 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren and 26 step grandchildren and 57 step great-grandchildren and one step great-great grandchild.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 5, 1994 at St. John's Lutheran Church with Rev. Lynn Groe officiating. Casket bearers were Gary Johnson, Darrell Johnson, Brian Johnson; Randy Bloxham, Bruce Anderson, Ronnie Berg, Darwin Johnson, Terry Johnson, Tim Gress, Jim Johnson and John Johnson. Arrangements were made by the Martin Funeral Home of Waukon. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery.
