James Patrick Wooden

James P. Wooden, 76, of Waukon died Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at his home in Waukon. Funeral services were held Friday, August 7 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial with military graveside rites was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Memorials may be given to Veterans Memorial Hospital or Robey Memorial Library, both in Waukon.

James Patrick Wooden was born March 17, 1933 in Winona, MN, the son of Joseph B. and Elizabeth (Tarras) Wooden. He graduated from Winona High School in 1951. Jim then spent two years serving in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of corporal, stationed most of the time at Fr. Campbell, KY. He returned to Winona, where he earned a degree in Industrial Arts Education from Winona State University. From 1960 to 1963 he taught school in Baltimore, MD. Following that he returned to the Midwest, where he began a long teaching career in the Waukon schools.

July 23, 1966, he married Kathryn Lester at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Winona, MN. Jim and Kathryn lived in Waukon, where he taught a number of different courses in the area of industrial arts until his retirement in 1993.

Jim was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, American Legion, ISEA and NEA, Allamakee County Sportsmans Club, and a life member of the NRA. He served as an EMT with the Veterans Memorial Hospital Ambulance Service for 10 years and was active in the Allamakee Community Players. His hobbies included hunting and shooting as well as woodworking.

Survivors include his wife Kathryn of Waukon; and two sons, Ron (Aurora) Wooden of Mexico and their children Alon, Frey, Patrick and Aberon, and Roger (Becky) Wooden of Waterloo and their children Reese, Landon and Abigail. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harold S. Wooden; and two sisters, Marie Krueger and Lorraine Sorenson.

Honorary casketbearers were Greg Krueger, Steve Wooden and Jim Fischer. Casketbearers were Bob and Jim Krueger, Al and Mick Lesky, Bernard Wooden, Guy Nowlan and Dave Hafner.
