Rev. Francis Nelson

Funeral services for the Rev. Francis Nelson were held Monday, Sept. 1 at First Lutheran Church, Hibbing, MN. Officiating Pastors were Bishop Herbert Chilstrom, the Rev. William Fossum and the Rev. Bruce Swanson.

Services were also held Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. The Rev. Julius L. Peterson officiated, assisted by the Rev. David H. Palm. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of local arrangements. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery.

The Rev. Francis Nelson, son of Ed and Sarah (Lennon) Nelson, was born June 14, 1937 at Postville, IA. He died Friday, Aug. 29, 1986 at Virginia Regional Medical Center, Virginia, MN.

He was baptized Aug. 3, 1938 and confirmed March 18, 1951. He was graduated from Postville Community Schools in 1955. Francis did his under-graduate work at Iowa State University and graduated from Northwestern Lutheran Theological Seminary. He did his post-graduate work at Yale University.

He was married to Jean Brandt on Aug. 26, 1956 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. They had 3 children. He was the Pastor at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Circle Pines, MN, from 1963 to 1969. They moved to Hibbing, MN where he has been the Pastor of First Lutheran Church for the past 17 years.

He is survived by his wife, Jean, two sons: Steven (Diane) Nelson, of Palo, MN, Philip (Holly) Nelson, of Shoreview, MN; a daughter, Mrs. Roger (Kris) Nicklay of Moorhead, MN; two grandchildren, Drew and Lindy Nelson; his parents, Ed and Sarah Nelson of Postville; one brother, Edgar (Arlet) Nelson, of Tempe, AZ and his father and mother-in-law, Ewald and Lois Brandt of Postville.

He served on the Executive Board of the Minnesota Synod of Lutheran Churches in America, was the current Chairman of Lutheran Social Service and Consultant for the Bladin Foundation. In 1973 he was awarded the Hibbing Distinguished Service Award for his work in the community.

Casket bearers were Ernest Groth, Ronaldo Hager, Milo Heins, Lyle Kneeskern, Elmer Marting, Jr., Leonard Schutte and Kenneth Timmerman.
