Gene A. Thorpe, Sr., 84, of Cedar Rapids died Saturday June 6, 2009 at his home after a long illness. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 10 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories in Cedar Rapids, with Rev. Brenda Peconge officiating. Entombment will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 9.

Gene was born September 18, 1924 in Lansing, the son of Ray and Anna Moeller Thorpe. He married Eleanora R. Olsen December 18, 1949 in Lansing. Gene was a machinist at Tucker Manufacturing for 35 years, retiring in 1995. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and especially time spent with his friends and beloved family.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanora; a daughter, Carol (Randy) Rentschler of Hiawatha; a son, Gene Jr. of Cedar Rapids; and a brother, Zane of Dubuque. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Kevin, Tim, Allyssa and Scott; and five great-grandchildren, Ashley, Tyler, Devin, Khiah and Tara. He was preceded in death by five sisters and eight brothers.
