Inez Bruce

Inez Bruce, 96, of Mesa, AZ, formerly of Waterville and Postville, died December 30, 2008 in Mesa, AZ. Memorial services will be held at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 16. She had in recent years been living with Alzheimer's disease.

Inez was born May 16, 1912 in Waterville, the daughter of Gilbert and Julia (Rema) Jeglum. Her parents were some of the first permanent Norwegian settlers to make this area their home, arriving in May of 1850. She was baptized and confirmed in Norwegian at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church. In 1930 she graduated from Waterville High School, where she participated in musical programs, was a member of the glee club and played the piano. Inez married Charles Volz, and several years after his death married Lloyd Bruce. She spent most of her working life in the newborn nursery department of Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI.

Inez was a longtime member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in La Crosse, WI, where even though she worked a late shift at the hospital, she always made sure that Cheryl and Gary got to Sunday School. She stayed active in music all her life, singing in many different choral groups. Early among them was the La Crosse Vocational Civic Choir in 1943.

Inez and Lloyd were longtime residents of Postville and liked traveling. They made many trips to visit her children in Colorado and California, and also visited Oregon, Hawaii and Arizona. After Lloyd died, Inez lived in Postville for several years and spent winters in Arizona until she was unable to safely live alone and moved to Arizona year-round.

Survivors include a son, Gary (Linda) Volz of Gilbert, AZ; a daughter, Cheryl Stover of Sacramento, CA; two grandchildren, David (Janette) Volz and Amanda (Tony) Sisneros; three great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Emeline Jeglum of Waukon. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Charles and Lloyd; three sisters, Blanche Olga Jeglum, Mabel Hausman and Grace Anderson; and two brothers, James and LeRoy Jeglum.
