Joseph William Trey, Jr.

Joseph William Trey, Jr., 58, of Cedar Rapids died Monday, April 20, 2009 at Lantern Park Nursing and Rehab in Coralville from complications of Lou Gehrig's Disease. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 25 at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.

Joseph William Trey, Jr. was born May 10, 1950 in Waterloo, the son of Joseph William and Ruth Margaret (Dietsch) Trey. He lived with his family in a number of different communities while growing up and graduated from Edgewood High School. Joe had a long military career, serving with the United States Marine Corps from 1969 until 1973. During that time he did a tour of duty in Vietnam as a sergeant with an infantry unit. In 1974 he joined the Marine Corps Reserves, serving as a 1st sergeant with an artillery unit in Waterloo.

He was activated during Desert Storm and promoted to sergeant major before retiring from the reserves in 1992. September 22, 1990, Joe married Lorraine Olson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived in Cedar Rapids, where Joe had a variety of jobs. From 1968 until 1990 he worked with Wilson/Farmstead foods, where he served as union steward for United Food and Commercial Workers Local P3. Following that he took classes and training at Kirkwood Community College for two years. He went on to work with An Earth Art, Metal Fabricators, All State Steel and Metal Design Systems, all in Cedar Rapids, until health conditions forced his retirement in 2008.

Joe was a member of VFW Post 788 in Cedar Rapids and also the United Food and Commercial Workers Union. He enjoyed camping, trout fishing, reading, and loved to bake. Going to auctions to look for antiques was another favorite pastime, especially those auctions held by Brent Wears. Joe also looked forward to visiting with his many friends. Joe will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him and also by his cat Smokey.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine, of Cedar Rapids; six siblings, Christine (James) Russell of Littleton, CO, Keith Trey of Eldora, Janeen (Tom) Millenkamp of Dubuque, Greg (Joyce) Trey of Strawberry Point, John Trey of Dubuque, and Maribeth (Dean) Braaten of Grand Meadow, MN; and a brother-in-law, Robert Olson, of Harpers Ferry. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Casketbearers were Joe Auchus, Bill Elam, Bob Parr, Leo Johanns, Jeremy Farmer, Rob Naggatz and Herb Dehli.
